How to Write a Goodbye Letter to a Pet
A child-friendly letter structure built around love, memory, and thanks.
How can a child write a goodbye letter without feeling pressured to say the perfect thing?
A letter can be one sentence, a drawing, or a page. The goal is expression, not polished writing.
Start with your child’s age
Ages 4–6
Let the child dictate while an adult writes, or use a drawing with “I love you” underneath.
Ages 7–9
Use three prompts: I remember…, Thank you for…, I will keep…
Ages 10–12
Offer the same prompts but allow the letter to remain private.
A simple way forward
- 1
Begin with the pet’s name.
- 2
Name one ordinary memory.
- 3
Say thank you for one thing.
- 4
End with what the family will carry forward.
