How to Make a Pet Memory Box

Choose a few safe, meaningful objects without turning remembrance into a shopping list.

What belongs in a pet memory box made with children?

A shoebox is enough. The value comes from the stories attached to the objects, not the price of the box.

Start with your child’s age

Ages 4–6

Choose two or three sturdy objects and tell the story of each one.

Ages 7–9

Add a drawing, photo, written memory, and one familiar object.

Ages 10–12

Let the child curate a private or shared box and decide where it will be kept.

A simple way forward

  1. 1

Choose a container already at home.

  2. 2

Add a photo or copy rather than an irreplaceable original.

  3. 3

    Include a written memory.

  4. 4

Avoid unsafe, sharp, leaking, or fragile items.

  5. 5

Label the box with a name or simple phrase.
