Pet Goodbye Activities for Children

Five low-pressure ways children can take part without being required to speak.

What can a child do during a pet goodbye?

Participation should be an invitation, not proof of love. A child may draw, write, arrange, listen, or choose not to take part at that moment.

Start with your child’s age

Ages 4–6

Offer drawing, choosing a color, or placing a flower or paper heart.

Ages 7–9

Try a memory card, a short letter, or selecting three favorite photos.

Ages 10–12

Offer music, a photo layout, a private journal page, or a reading.

A simple way forward

  1. 1

    Draw a favorite ordinary day.

  2. 2

Write or dictate one thank-you sentence.

  3. 3

Choose an object for a memory box.

  4. 4

    Plant something with adult supervision.

  5. 5

    Create a small photo corner.
